Police in Florida say a man who calls himself Jesus Christ repeatedly threatened and attacked his neighbour after accusing him of being the Antichrist.

Palm Bay Police Department officers received a complaint about 51-year-old Kenneth Peterson after he allegedly attacked his neighbour, Fred Padilla, on Charles Boulevard.

“He told police that the reason he was attacking us was because he was the saviour and I was Satan. I believe that was the word he used,” said Padilla.

Officers said Peterson attacked Padilla, or damaged the neighbour’s property, multiple times since February.

Peterson is accused of shooting at Padilla with a BB gun. Officials said most recently, Peterson threatened Padilla with a crowbar.

Padilla said he has a restraining order against Peterson and police have arrested him two times, but each time the state attorney’s office has not pressed charges saying there was a lack of evidence.

Padilla installed surveillance cameras to catch Peterson in the act and said it worked, because over the weekend Peterson was arrested for the third time.

Detectives were working on a ruse to get Peterson out of his home on Wednesday, but they say they apprehended him when he came out to get his mail instead.

Peterson did try to retreat back into his home, but officers stopped him just short of the front door.

Officers said they seized multiple items from Peterson’s home, after obtaining a search warrant.

“He has to be removed from a position where he can do damage to us and other people. If he needs treatment, then take him somewhere where he can get that treatment,” said Padilla.

Police said Padilla never did anything to provoke Peterson’s attacks.

Peterson faces aggravated assault charges and stalking charges. He is being held on $150,000 bond at the Brevard County Jail.

A man is awaiting his sentencing in Louisiana for kidnapping his mother and threatening to beat her with a picture of Jesus and a statue of the Virgin Mary.

His mother told police that she woke up in the middle of the night on August 4th, 2011 to find the 49-year-old Kenneth Roberts Jr. standing over her head.

She claimed he threatened to beat her with the picture of Jesus and statue of Mary unless she drove him to an ATM and withdraw $80 so he could repay a debt to a drug dealer.

They drove to a nearby ATM where she took out the money. She reported the incident to police the next morning.

Roberts was later arrested while trying to hide in a bedroom closet.

The mother later changed her story, telling police that she wasn’t kidnapped and went to the ATM willingly.

During the trial, prosecutors played recorded phone conversations between Roberts and his mother in which Roberts tells his mother to help get him out of prison, to avoid court subpoenas and what to tell the prosecutor and the judge.

Roberts was found guilty of simple kidnapping, but the prosecution also added a sentencing enhancement provision to the charge due to the fact this was a crime of violence against a person over the age of 65.

He is facing up to eight years in prison when sentenced.

Florida police have arrested a 26-year-old meth user who they believe set a massive brush fire that burned down one of the oldest trees in the United States last month.

Sara Barnes, 26, of Winter Park, was arrested on Tuesday and charged with setting the blaze that destroyed a 3,500-year-old bald cypress, known as “The Senator,” at Big Tree Park in Longwood, north of Orlando, last month, the Orlando Sentinel reported.

Barnes told police that she regularly hid out in the park to get high, and on Jan. 16, she lit a fire so she could see better. The fire got out of control and spread to the 125-foot state treasure.

A local reported the fire at around 5:45 a.m., and more than a dozen firefighters responded to the scene, weaving more than 800 feet of hose through nearly a mile of the forest’s dense brush.

The hollow tree burned for more than three hours from inside out, creating a chimney effect, before collapsing.

Just 25 feet of charred bark remained standing.

Police said Barnes told some pals about the fire, and a tipster eventually alerted police.

During a raid on her apartment on Tuesday, cops found methamphetamine, a glass pipe and other drug paraphernalia, as well as pictures of the tree fire on Barnes’ laptop and cellphone.

One source told local station WFTV that Barnes had showed the pics to pals and bragged, “I can’t believe I burned down a tree older than Jesus.”

The Senator was the oldest Pond Bald Cypress in the United States, and the fifth-oldest tree on the planet.

Also known as simply “The Big Tree,” it was named for state lawmaker M.O. Overstreet, who donated the tree and its surrounding land to Seminole County in 1927. The tree was the main attraction in the park, which was dedicated by President Calvin Coolidge in 1929.

Locals said they were devastated that such an important state landmark had gone up in smoke.

“I heard about that and I was horrified,” Thomas Settle told WESH-TV. “That’s a big part of Florida’s culture. I visited that park when I was a little kid and saw that tree.”
