A police officer in Iowa accidentally ran over a woman who was lying in the street. Des Moines police said that the incident occurred at about 12:50 a.m..
Someone called police to check on a person who was lying in the street or alley.
Officer Brian Cuppy responded to the call, but did not see the woman lying in the alley until his car ran over her legs.
Police told that the injuries were not life-threatening, scraps and bruises. She was taken to Mercy Medical Center.
“Certainly the darkness and the person lying in the middle of the roadway are somewhat unusual. The positioning of the body may have led the officer to not see it the way they may have if it was an open street sounds like a unfortunate accident an hopefully we’ll all learn from it,” said Lt. David Ness of Des Moines police.
Police said the woman was intoxicated. Her name has not yet been released.
The case remains under investigation.
