In a strange twist, unofficial results show that a New Mexico mayoral candidate who has been barred from city hall because of extortion charges has been elected mayor.
Sunland Park mayor pro tem Daniel Salinas garnered the most votes on Tuesday in defeating two others – even though he is accused of being involved in a plot to force an opponent out of the race by secretly recording him receiving a lap dance from a topless woman.

Salinas and two other city workers face charges in the alleged extortion case.
Meanwhile, a second Sunland Park city employee also faces voter fraud charges.
26-year-old Priscilla Morales, of El Paso, was arrested on Tuesday as part of a state voter fraud probe.
It was unclear if she had an attorney.
