And sticking with elderly women …. Grand Junction police have arrested a 73-year-old woman on a warrant this week who they suspect was the getaway driver in a robbery last month.
Mesa County resident Barbara Mae West posted bond on Thursday after being arrested on tentative charges of vehicular eluding, burglary and trespass.
A police report indicated that West borrowed an SUV from an acquaintance with an explanation that she needed to use it to get to church.
According to documents, West was at the wheel of that SUV when it sped off from the scene of a burglary on 28 1/2 Road on Jan. 23.
Police drove after the vehicle and caught up with it when it got stuck at the dead end area of a street.
Two men who were believed to be responsible for the burglary allegedly ran away from the car but West stayed at the wheel and “just sat there and looked forward, not acknowledging (a police officer) was talking to her.”
Police said that the men stole expensive electrical piping, and that it was found in the vehicle.
West was taken to jail after the crime and released from jail, then arrested this week again on a warrant.
