The widow of an Ashtabula County man killed in a bizarre accident caused by a runaway horse, has been arrested for her alleged role in a murder-for-hire plot.
The story began to unfold on November 18, when a horse owned by an Amish farmer broke loose at an auction, and as the animal ran back to its owner’s farm, it collided with a car driven by 45-year-old Daniel Brown, of Dorset. Brown was killed instantly, and another driver was killed when he swerved to avoid the accident debris in the road.
Brown’s mother, Colleen Posey, told Fox 8, “I thought it was the biggest tragedy I’ve ever seen in my life. It was the hardest thing I think I’ve ever dealt with in my life.”
Posey said her grief turned to stunned disbelief when her late son’s wife, 34-year-old Angel Brown, was arrested on Wednesday on a charge of conspiracy to commit aggravated murder.
Investigators told the family that Angel Brown tried to hire a hit man to kill Daniel Brown’s first wife because she felt the woman was trying to claim a share of his estate and the death benefit on his insurance policy.
Daniel Brown’s mother says she can’t find the words to tell Daniel’s 7-year-old son, Dartanian, known as “Dar,” that his mother has been arrested.
“I couldn’t believe it. And then it was like, ‘Where’s, my Dar?’ That was who I was worried about. Where was Dar? Angel is an adult, but Dar just lost his dad… now his mother.”
It turns out that the would-be hit man was an informant for the Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Office and after meeting with Angel Brown, he contacted authorities and told them Brown had already given him $4,000 to carry out the plot.
Daniel Brown’s family said they’ve been told that detectives set up surveillance equipment, and then recorded a follow-up meeting between Angel Brown and the man she thought was a hit man. She was arrested later that night.
What started as a horse breaking loose at an auction, has left a young boy without his father, and his mother facing the possibility of going to prison.
“It’s been horrible, it’s made life pure hell, and I can’t deal with it”, said Posey. “I can’t deal with losing my son.”
Angel Brown is being held in the Ashtabula County Jail on a bond of $100,000.
